Learning to Stay

Rediscovering the wonder in ordinary life.

Learning to Stay

Oh… there you are.

I’m glad you’re here.

A friend shared a short video with me this week. In it, a woman reflected on the many paths she had taken in search of healing.

Therapies.

Books.

Practices.

Protocols.

Teachers.

And then she ended with a simple realization:

The answer wasn’t finding the next thing. It was learning to stay with herself.

My friend wrote, “This is what I was hoping for.”

It stopped me.

I know my friend. I know this isn’t new to her. And still, something in those words reached her.

We all need reminding.

As I open my newest magical face cream delivery, perhaps I do, too.

We’re constantly surrounded by invitations to keep searching.

Another supplement.

Another expert. Another practice.

Sometimes they are exactly what we need.

I’ve been helped by wonderful teachers and practitioners.

The best ones always pointed me back to myself.

Because if every answer requires us to leave ourselves, we never learn how to stay. I’ve been thinking about that a lot.

I’m not suggesting we stop learning. I hope we never do.

Sometimes a book changes us.

Sometimes a retreat opens something we’ve never seen before.

But it’s easy to forget that we still have to live what we find.

What if the deepest work begins with noticing when we’ve left ourselves?

Maybe healing is staying.

Staying when grief rises. Staying when uncertainty visits.

Staying when shame tells you to become someone else.

Staying long enough to hear your own life again.

A good practice makes you more available to your own breath, to your own life.

Otherwise, it’s easy to lose sight of what we were looking for in the first place.

Little by little, we stop abandoning ourselves.

We begin meeting our teachers, our practices, and our experiences differently.

Not searching for someone to complete us or fix us,

but allowing each one to deepen our relationship with our own life.

Perhaps that’s what it means to come home.

This week’s invitation:

This week, before reaching for the next answer, stay with yourself a little longer.

Long enough to notice what your own life has been trying to tell you.
