7 DIMENSIONS OF WELLNESS

Occupational Wellness

I am purposeful and seek satisfaction in what I do.

Occupational Wellness is gaining personal fulfillment from a job, career, or volunteer position while still maintaining balance in life.

By taking steps to promote occupational wellness, you can improve your overall health, happiness, and productivity. Emotional intelligence (EQ) helps us thrive in the workplace. According to Author Daniel Goleman, Ph.D., who wrote, Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ, the five key components of EQ are:

  • Self-awareness: This is the ability to understand your emotions and how they affect you.
  • Self-regulation: This is the ability to manage your emotions in a way that is appropriate and productive.
  • Motivation: This is the ability to set and work towards goals, even when faced with challenges.
  • Empathy: This is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others.
  • Social skills: The ability to communicate effectively and build relationships with others.

Working towards Occupational Wellness can help you build strong relationships, resolve conflicts, and be an effective team player and leader. Prioritizing balance and staying true to our values can increase personal fulfillment and job satisfaction. Wellness in this dimension requires awareness and deliberate effort to slow down and work at the rhythm of our nervous system. Overworking ourselves can cause us to ignore our biological needs. Recognizing the importance of balancing work and life, we can help each other find purpose and personal fulfillment in our chosen career paths.

“When my first child was born, I began reacting to an internalized belief that ‘good mothers’ do not work outside the home. So, when my second child was born, I left my job as a branch manager at a bank. I thought being home was what was expected of me, and my career took a back seat for a few years.

In my thirties, my father died, and I got a divorce. The decade was an emotional roller coaster, but my grief and transition propelled me forward. I returned to the workplace through this challenging period and stepped into my power.”
